Reality
The book of Hebrews has really been messing with me. There is a Reality the writer is trying to communicate that is so beyond words and concepts that in several places the writer combines existing words to create new terms to communicate the Reality. It is a Reality so powerful, that it begins, divides and concludes ages. A Reality so all encompassing that literally everything has its beginning, sustenance and ending in it. This Reality is THE Reality, it is the only thing that IS. It was before all things and will be long after all things cease. When you ask its name it responds simply “I AM”.
Yet, as completely inaccessable as this Reality is through our own capacities, as beyond our ability to retain and comprehend this Reality, the Reality comes to us. This Reality, God, has come and spoken the full final Word in Jesus. It has come and opened the door into Reality. Not for the strong, not for the elite, not for those with the right capacity…for all
Still, being confronted as profoundly and pursued as ferociously as I have been…there are moments Reality is elusive. Not because Reality has changed, rather, there are moments when other things feel more real. There are moments other things fight to become the subject in the grand narrative of life…there are moments when I fight to become the subject of the grand narrative of life.
I continue to be amazed that even there, in those places where perspective eludes us, Reality pursues. After all, it could be otherwise. I want to live in such a way that the subject of the narrative I’ve been invited to participate in is not confused or forgotten. I want to be a part of “…putting flesh on the mystery of God.” Quite simply, I want to live in Reality and do so in a way that invites others to dwell there with me.
